The Journey of Rwandan Coffee

Rwanda’s coffee-growing regions are nestled in the lush hills of the country, where volcanic soil and ideal climate conditions contribute to the exceptional taste of its beans. The most well-known coffee varieties produced here include Arabica, particularly Bourbon and Typica, which thrive in the high altitudes of the region.

Tasting Notes

Rwandan coffee is celebrated for its bright acidity and complex flavor notes. Expect to find hints of:

  • Fruity undertones such as citrus and berries
  • Floral aromas
  • A smooth, velvety body

Each cup of Rwandan coffee tells a story of the land and its people, providing a delightful experience for your palate.

Fun Fact

Did you know? Rwanda is often referred to as the “Land of a Thousand Hills,” and its coffee farms are often situated on these picturesque hillsides!

Plantation Notes

The Kageyo wet mill recently underwent renovation, expanding their milling infrastructure in order to increase their production capabilities. The association is made up of small farmers situated around this 2000 meter wet mill, and coffee in the region is some of the highest altitudes we see in all of Rwanda. Like much of Rwanda, the coffee planted in the region is Bourbon variety. It’s worth mentioning that this should not be confused with “Kigeyo”, a name that you may recognize from other cafe menus. This is a separation of all the small, round peaberries, which occur when one seed fails to germinate inside the cherry.

Brewing the Perfect Cup

To fully appreciate the unique characteristics of Rwandan coffee, try brewing it using methods that highlight its nuanced flavors. The pour-over and French press methods are excellent choices. Here‘s a quick brewing guide:

  1. Use freshly ground coffee beans for the best flavor.
  2. Measure a standard ratio of 1:15 coffee to water.
  3. Bloom your coffee by adding hot water and letting it sit for 30 seconds.
  4. Pour water evenly over the grounds, and enjoy your delicious cup!

Conclusion

This month, as you sip on your Rwandan coffee, take a moment to appreciate the journey of these beans from the fertile hills of Rwanda to your cup. Whether you’re a seasoned coffee connoisseur or a casual drinker, Rwandan coffee is sure to impress!
