Distinctive Flavor Profile:

Growing Conditions:

  • Volcanic Soil: The island of Sumatra is known for its volcanic activity, and the fertile volcanic soil imparts unique characteristics to the coffee grown there.   
  • High Altitudes: Most Sumatran coffee is grown in the highlands, where the cooler temperatures and higher altitudes contribute to the development of complex flavors.   

Popular Varieties:

  • Mandheling: This is perhaps the most well-known Sumatran coffee, grown in the northern part of the island. It’s known for its full body and complex flavors.   
  • Gayo Mountain: Grown in the Aceh province, this coffee often has a brighter acidity than other Sumatran coffees, along with floral and citrus notes.
  • Lintong: From the Lake Toba region, Lintong coffee is known for its herbal and spicy notes.
